- Polarized lenses are laminated. A thin polarizing film is bonded inside the lens. Harsh solvents and heat can lift its edges or cloud it — damage you can never polish out.
- Mirror and flash coatings sit on the outside. That reflective layer is the most exposed surface on the lens, so abrasive wiping scratches it first.
- Tints and top coats add up. Gradient tints, anti-reflective backs, and hydrophobic layers all react badly to ammonia, acetone, and dry rubbing.

- Rinse first. Lukewarm water floats off sand and grit so you don't grind it into the lens.
- Spray, don't scrub. One or two pumps of a pH-balanced, coating-safe lens spray on each side.
- Wipe with clean microfiber. Light, straight strokes — never a shirt, tissue, or paper towel.
- Air-dry. Buffing dry drags leftover grit across the coating.
