Lens cleaner looks like water in a bottle, but the formulation is where quality lives. If you're sourcing a cleaner to sell or private-label, here's what's inside and why it matters.

Surfactants — the actual cleaning

Surfactants lift oils, fingerprints, and grime off the lens and let water carry them away. Too little and it smears; too much and it leaves residue. Balance is everything.

The solvent base

Most cleaners are mostly purified water with a small amount of solvent. That solvent speeds drying and dissolves oils. Which solvent — and how much — determines how fast it dries and how gentle it is on coatings.

Isopropyl alcohol — useful, in the right dose

A modest amount of alcohol cuts grease and flashes off fast, leaving no streaks. Too much can stress certain coatings and smells harsh. Good formulas use it sparingly.
